!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! we pulled the front clip and engine/transmission out of the truck. Frustratingly weather, timing and health have been keeping me from making a lot of progress since then.

Kinja'd!!!

I separated the engine & transmission to free the bellhousing, the only major component I will be reusing for the “new” drivetrain.

I also got the left suspension stripped off. The only part of the suspension & brakes I’ll be re-using are the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! (with new bushings), the center link, & steering box.

Once all the suspension & brake lines have been stripped off I will be doing major cleaning/degreasing in here, then either grinding or sandblasting the frame for painting before slapping new components on and running new brake lines. Then the new drivetrain can get assembled and installed.

This was all supposed to happened this spring/summer but the busted collar bone screwed it up. So I’m just hoping I can get it back together enough to put the nose back on before snow falls.

I hope the new engine will be an inline six as well. Atlas LL8 perhaps?  I’m pretty sure that the bellhousing wouldn’t be useful for this...

Still inline, I’m going from the completely worn out 230 to a 18K mile 250. So externally identical, meaning I can reuse almost everything off the old motor.

Atlass LL8 would tempt me except it requires custom-machined bellhousing & flywheel, and custom modified aluminum oil pan and pickup. So it is *way* out of my budget.

Great! Where did you find so low mileage engine? From a parted fire truck?

The only bolt on solution for an LL8 is to use an automatic which is slightly boring. I’m trying to mate one with a ZF transmission from an E60 BMW. I’m still drawing the bellhousing adapter but I’m not yet sure about the oil pan.

They had the motor rebuilt in 1998, then parked the truck 18K later when it failed inspection for frame rot, intending to fix it. Ended up being sold for parts, and the guy that bought it sold me the engine cheap as he was just trying to get his money back after taking the bits he needed. Showed me the receipt for the engine out of a stack of receipts and inch thick.
